Today marks a huge milestone for us as we officially launch Homefront Group, a venture that began as a simple idea and has grown into a full-scale mission to “Upgrade Veteran Lives.” This isn’t just a company—it’s personal. We’re veterans and veteran family members helping veterans navigate some of the toughest challenges they face after service. And I want to share how this all came together.
Back in the Spring of 2023, I met Chris Czaplak, a former Navy JAG, while networking with investors on LinkedIn. We decided to meet for coffee at Second Nature in Pacific Beach, San Diego. Finding a business partner is hard, but sometimes you just click with someone right away. That’s exactly what happened with Chris. I knew instantly we could build something great together.
Chris has a deep understanding of the law and the challenges veterans face, especially when they’re up against the system. I’ve spent my career in sales, marketing, and startups, and I’ve always had a passion for solving problems for customers. Together, we saw a major opportunity to make a real impact, starting with one of the biggest veteran-related issues at the time: the water contamination at Camp Lejeune.
You’ve probably seen the TV commercials about the Camp Lejeune lawsuits. Law firms have spent hundreds of millions of dollars generating awareness for this mass tort case. It’s a huge deal—hundreds of thousands of veterans and their families were exposed to toxic water, and many suffered serious health consequences. But despite all that marketing, fewer than 10% of potential claimants had filed a claim when Chris and I first met. It didn’t make sense that so few veterans were stepping forward.
So, we started digging in and asking questions. Why weren’t veterans filing claims? The answer, we realized, came down to three core issues:
- Lack of trust – Many veterans didn’t trust the law firms running those ads.
- The process was too hard or confusing – Even if veterans wanted to file, they didn’t know how or felt overwhelmed by the process.
- It seemed too expensive – Veterans were worried about legal fees eating into their potential compensation. Some said they’d rather get nothing than pay a lawyer 40%.
It became clear to us that there was a huge gap between what veterans needed and what the system was offering. We decided to step in and fill that gap. We ran some Facebook ads and started talking directly to veterans. It didn’t take long to confirm what we suspected. During consultations, I heard veterans say things like, “I don’t trust these other guys,” or “I don’t know where to start,” or “I’d rather get nothing than pay a lawyer that much.” These conversations made it clear that our approach—veterans helping veterans, with transparent, lower-cost legal services—was exactly what they needed.
So, we got to work. We built a small team of veterans to help veteran families file their Camp Lejeune claims. In just 10 months, we went from zero clients to 297, with over $49 million in pending claims. That initial success validated our mission, but it also opened our eyes to the fact that legal issues like Camp Lejeune are just the tip of the iceberg.
As we helped veterans with their Camp Lejeune claims, we kept hearing about the other challenges they face—everything from denied VA benefits to financial hardship caused by medical conditions related to toxic exposure, to wrongfully determined discharge statuses that kept them from securing jobs or housing. Veterans face a unique set of legal challenges, and far too often, they don’t have the resources to navigate these obstacles.
But legal issues are just one part of the problem. The bigger picture is that transitioning from military to civilian life is incredibly difficult for many veterans. It’s about more than just finding a job—although that’s a major challenge, too. Veterans struggle with personal finance, education, housing, and mental health, and they often don’t know where to turn for help. Despite the fact that there are over 45,000 veteran service organizations in the U.S., many veterans still feel lost in the system.
Why? After talking to hundreds of veterans, we believe it comes down to three things:
- Misaligned incentives – Many organizations exist to help veterans, but the structure doesn’t always put the veteran’s needs first.
- A confusing process – Navigating benefits, resources, and legal issues can be overwhelming, even for the most seasoned veterans.
- Lack of access to the right experts – Veterans need help from people who understand their unique situation, but those experts can be hard to find.
We believe Homefront can help solve these problems. Our goal is to provide veterans with a tailored set of legal, career, and financial services that truly meet their needs. Our services will be tech-enabled, efficient, and delivered by experts who are also veterans and veteran family members. And we’re committed to offering these services at a fair price that allows everyone—veterans and service providers alike—to win.
That’s why today’s public launch of Homefront Group is such an important step. We’re just getting started, but we’re driven by a clear vision: to upgrade veteran lives..
